One of my favorite things is a vintage Bill Blass tuxedo that I bought in a New York thrift store some fifteen years ago. I wonder who else wore it, what they looked like, how they were built (it needed alterations to fit me), where they went in it. The fact of its having a life other than with me gives it power and meaning.

so this is a japanese word and concept? interestingly, the maori culture of new zealand has the same word with a very similar meaning. in maori, mana is associated with things, but more often with people. more on maori mana:
