There is a long history of quilters, knitters, and stitchers of all types picking up their needles and making things to either donate or sell for fundraising drives. Whenever there is a catastrophe within days there are projects launched to assist victims.
So is this time. Auctions have been organized to raise money, new partnerships have been formed, donating to relief work is encouraged.
This reminds me of how blogs surpassed the traditional media in offering a more timely and (often, though not always) accurate view into what actually happened and what kind of help was needed during the 2004 tsunami on the Indian Ocean. For example, the Sukellus.fi blog maintained an up-to-date list of Finns who survived, based on text messages sent by volunteers in the area - information that Finland's Foreign Ministry was unable to gather and publish until days later.
The craft blogger community’s admirable activities are a good example of how non-political hobby networks can be mobilized for a common cause.
