A good way to stay up-to-date with the Finnish snowboarding scene is lumitykki.net ('snowblower'), which features the recent news, events and daily topics. In the on-line chat you may find devoted discussion on snowboarding equipment, trick tips, and some less obvious topics –such as how to make a beanie.
A while ago Nyt-liite featured crocheting in a fresh context by introducing three snowboarders – Fernando Korpi, Ville Lahtinen ja Raine Kukkonen – who make their own beanies. Initially, said the article, Fernando got into the headgear fashion by reading an article about Ville’s beanie brand Outo ('weird'). Raine’s vocation for creating his own beanie line started last year, when beanie-crocheting became the coolest thing on the lumitykki forum.
Indeed, the nearly five-month long thread on crocheting encouraged young guys (such as Ernino) to take up the hook. What an excellent example of the meaning of making your own stuff!
Having about twenty different kinds of hobbybeanies in the closet I symphatize with those who prefer a product of their own manufacture to the (often boring) commercial ones. Last week I got to test my two favorite beanies in action:
The brown beanie with removable earflaps 18 rows of single crochet stitches with a 5 mm hook (2 hours)
The yellow beanie 54 rows of ‘one-knit-stitch-one purl-stitch’ pattern, 3,5 mm hook (3 hours)
